Thanksgiving & Birthday week!

So I hope you guys liked the pics! I am sorry I really don't have too much time left, but I want you to know I love you, and I am focusing hard on my mission. Don't worry about me, I will just work hard so I can't think too much about the holidays. Thank you for the birthday wishes :) and man I cannot wait to eat Thanksgiving again with you all :) Thanksgiving doesn't exist here, but I'll probably get some chooks-to-go or something. I have like no time left right now, I have to go. But hey, dad that's so sick you did El Tour! Hahaha you're untameable now! Please tell Maile good luck at her concert, and I love you all! Mom, I hope you got my previous email. Thank you so much for everything you are all doing for me. I love you! Happy Thanksgiving :)

Love,

Elder Rand

I thought it'd be cool if I sent you some pics of the people we're teaching. So here ya go! :)

So at this community service project we harvested rice (later in the week we planted rice too, I took some pics of that I'll send to you) and the people we helped cooked us some goat! And this is how they cooked it....and the outcome :)

So this is me planting rice! It was a fun community service project, but I do not want to do it again! Hahaha but it's humbling to realize this is where my rice is coming from...heheh in one of the pics my sock came off...

New Comp from Tacloban Mission

I have a new companion. He is from the Tacloban Mission, where Typhoon Yolanda hit the hardest. His name is Elder Diaz. I cannot even imagine all the things he has gone through. On the news I saw pictures of people shot trying to get food, I saw the bodies they laid in the street because they have no where else to put them. And I saw the destruction of entire cities, wiped clean from 190mph winds. Well he saw all of that in person. And he told me this really cool story, they had to rendezvous at the mission home, and from there walk to the airport. When they got to the airport they was no room for them on the planes. Then they saw a U.S. Air Force pilot calling out to them. Turns out he was an RM [a Returned Missionary from our church], and he flew them personally to Manila. He also said that buildings and houses all around their apartment were torn down and blown away, but his apartment stood. I hear all the time that miracles don't exist. Not true, they do exist. Angels were roundabout those missionaries.

As for my week, well it has been great! I had a really good interview with Pres. Martino this week. And the work is definitely picking up. I am excited for this week! I actually had a fever the other day, but my comp gave me a blessing and the next day BAM! gone. Hahaha just like that, too. Anyway, I'm glad to here things are going well with you guys! Hahaha sounds like dad had fun taking care of the girls for a bit ;) Mom, you went to Disneyland??? What theeee....hahaha you sound like a party animal when you're with your friends! Hahaha! Well, I have to do some reports, my time is pretty short nowadays :( But I love you all so much! Please be safe :)

Love,

Elder Rand

REVISION:

Dad, thought you might like this a bit better hahaha. It wasn't Air Force, it was a Marine who set up for them to fly on the C-130. And the walk to the airport was about 50kms.

After the storm...

Hello family!

This week...ha. It's been fun. The work is a lot better now. We have an area that we go to a few times a week that is actually about an hour-long hike up a mountain. There is actually a lottt of less-actives up there, so it's worth the hike. And yes! Sorry! I am okay, all that happened to us was a lot of rain and a bit of wind, so we are doing well! I cannot believe how devastating this storm was. So many people are homeless now. I know this is against the rules, but one of the families we went to had the news on TV and they showed from the air all the destruction that happened to an area. I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to email you guys, we would have had to go to Camiling and we decided we ought to just keep working. Diligence, right? ;) So I hope you guys didn't worry too much, I am fine.

As for new experiences this week...I don't think I've had anything fun or exciting happen this week. It's been an average work week. We do have a really cool new investigator named Edmar. His parents are less-active, so we're trying to rescue them and set him up for baptism at the same time. We had an investigator whose baptism was set-up for my birthday, on Nov. 30, but he moved away..he said he would be coming back but we have no idea when. He had gone to church five times before moving away, so he was ready and everything.

Aw well..I...don't even know what to talk about. My mind has been blown this week. I really feel like if I were to take a nap right now I wouldn't wake up for a couple days. Man, I'm wiped.  It sounds like you guys are doing great though, from all of your emails. That's way cool the wall's going up pretty fast, and dad, not gonna lie, I'm a little jealous of the quad-riding and all that jazz ;) Life sounds like it is treating you all well. I am so excited to come home, but I know that my time here is more important for now.  It's been a bit of a trunky transfer so far, and the closer Christmas and everything gets the harder it's been to fight feelings of sadness. But I can't wait to hit a year. I know it'll get a lot easier once I hit the top of that hill, and start going down :)

Ah, so mom could I possibly request one more thing? I don't want to be a burden to you guys, but I have worn out the soles on all three sets of shoes. Could you maybe send me just one set of replacement soles, maybe those Dr. Scholl's or whatever it is? We walk a lot, hahaha I'm so sorry I feel bad asking for this, if it's too much please do not worry about it. I will manage just fine :) Thank you so much for everything you are doing for me. I love and miss you all soooo much! Please know I am safe and healthy, and overall doing well :) Be safe you guys, girls read your scriptures ;)

Love,

Elder K.H. Rand

Letter and pix from Kendric and Elder Bell's parents

Oorah! Danggg that's a nice buck. Congratulations dad!! Dude I want to go shooting so bad right now. Rrghh..Holy cow that looks so cool! I cannot wait dad. What season will I be coming home in? January-ish? Is there anything going on then? I am so stoked! Man I feel like that's forever away. The days have been dragging this week. My new companion does not talk at all, and it's just me and him in our apartment so it has been suppper lonely. At least as a DL I get to call everyone in my district every night, so I honestly look forward to that everyday just to have someone to talk to. I just wish he would talk! I just want someone to talk to..But I'm hanging in there. One thing this mission has taught me is patience, because all trials pass. The work in my area has started to kick off, I've focused all of our efforts on finding new people to teach, and rescuing less-actives. It's progressing, slowly. My new companion is not very good at teaching, but that's also how my other trainee was at first. The thing is he just looks at this short-term mission as practice, not an actual mission. But I'm trying to guide him the right way, and help him learn. It would help if he talked to me a little bit more though..So anyways, one of Pres. Martino's counselors, Pres. Javier (he used to be CEO of Coca-Cola Philippines, I hear) came to our branch yesterday to see why the attendance has fallen so much. This was also my first Sunday going to church in this branch. He was so cool. He is probably one of the greatest men I have ever met. And this week I've been feeling pretty down, until yesterday, because of him. Pres. Javier just knew exactly what to say to help me. He helped me remember I am here to save souls. That is the work of this Church. It was just a really good reminder. So dad, you asked me how I'm really doing, and to be honest, I am doing really well. I know why I'm here, I'm learning how to endure, and I know what I need to do.

Mom, they haven't closed down my last area. I don't think they will anymore, we've established a pretty strong presence there. My anak, E. Ofiana is doing really well over there. And yes, it was really cool meeting E. Bell's parents! They were super nice people, I'm glad they sent you some pictures :) I've also put a few pics on this email, of me and E. Batoy, a missionary in my district who I worked with last week, and with a member in their area. The American is E. Whittemore, a good friend of mine who's actually from my batch, meaning we entered the MTC and the field together. Then the other picture is my new area! You can see it's a lotttt of farm. Hahaha, and in the background you can see the church building :) So hopefully my letters are getting longer. I've been trying to put more in them. Let me know if they're not satisfactory, and if you want to know anything! I love you all so much, thank you for all your support and love. I miss you all! Please be safe, mom I'm glad your knee is getting better and you can run on it now :)

From Elder Bell's parents:

Sister Rand,

We had a great time in the Philippines.  It was an amazing experience to see our son's areas and meet so many of the people he taught and the members and missionaries that he was so close with.  We were there during transfers and saw a lot of the missionaries, including your son, at the mission office.  Elder Rand was looking well.  He just got transferred to Bamban.  That was our son's first area.   We went out there and had lunch with the member family (Eugenio) that fed him every night while he was there.  Here are a few pictures from our trip that include your son.  My wife posted a lot more pictures of our Philippines experience on FaceBook.  Not sure if you guys are FB friends.  If not, send her a request.
